Knitting a 1940's Sweater

Knitting a 1940's Sweater

Last year, I was going through one of my many vintage binges. Watching old movies, looking at fashions from the 1930s and 1940s (the most fashionable eras, in my opinion), playing old jazz records, perusing local antique and thrift shops. I've always found a sort of comfort in old things, in times where objects were designed and made with such great care, and meant to last a long time - a lifetime even.

So last summer I decided I wanted to try to make a vintage knitting project, using an old pattern, and settled on a polo pattern from the 1940s.

If you have ever looked at older knitting patterns from this era and around this time, you may know that they pose certain challenges. The most unfortunate is the lack of size inclusivity in the patterns, which is definitely notable since the patterns usually come in one size. Why this is, I can only imagine has to do with societal non-inclusivity (much like today sadly) when it comes to the full realistic ranges of body sizes that have always existed, and also an assumed knowledge of the knitter to do your own modifications. I have seen similar publications around this time that have detailed notes on how to do these modifications - they simply weren't included with every pattern purchased.

Also, expect no lace charting or finished size schematics! The only measurement you are given is the expected bust size. This was the most challenging part of the project for me when it came to blocking the individual pieces. I had to basically wing it.

All in all, I feel okay about the finished piece. It is slightly too small for my own styling. I have decided moving forward, I will only knit from vintage inspired patterns, instead of actual vintage patterns. There's just something to be said for size inclusivity, schematics, and charts!

What do you think about vintage patterns? Have you ever made something from a vintage pattern?
